Nellie Elidia Larson Nelson was born June 30, 1891 to recent Swedish immigrant Peter Larson and his wife Ingebord (Lerald) Larson, daughter of Norwegian immigrants. Peter had become a farm laborer after he immigrated to the US, then later worked for the railroad. The couple had 6 children and Nellie became the oldest after three of the children eventually died.
Nellie and her sister Inga attended Norwegian school but Nellie probably didn’t go to school much beyond eight grade. You will notice her lack of further education in the spelling and grammar of her letters. She was a very resourceful and ambitious woman however, as she kept an immaculate house, baked and canned, and sold cosmetics much like the Avon network of today.
Nellie and Magnus began dating while they were both very young. After Nellie’s mother died in 1909, Peter offered Nellie and Magnus all of the house furniture if they were to marry, so they soon did. Magnus and Nellie continued to live in Southwest Minnesota and had four children: my grandmother Milly, in addition to three sons, Clifford, Vernon (Beany) and Jerome, most often referred to as “the boys”. By the time the children were in High School, the Nelson family had settled in Appleton, Minnesota.
