Flooding across the Midwest in April 1943

“Dearest Kids,

We got home fine. Dad met us with the car. Susan fell asleep almost right away. Milly came home sick today from school and went right to bed. Her cold is very bad.

Three people drowned at Monte. Sun. It was Matzel’s oldest daughter, her husband and the oldest boy. They still left four smaller children. The river is so high and their place stood in the water so they were going to row to the road and come to town. The boat dipped and they all drowned. Sure to bad.

I sent you the Press today. Thanks for that lovely dinner and for coming to get me at Inga’s. It was so nice of you.

Will write later. I’ll send bread.

Mom”
