I was rather surprised to hear that you had sold the car- more so to hear what you got for it. I think you did a wise thing and am glad you didn’t wait for my approval. It wouldn’t have been worth half as much this fall. It must have been worth our while keeping up the appearance like we did.

I just heard that Lorne will be a civilian by the time you receive this. I’m happy to hear about it. Still have no idea when I’ll get home except what the papers and news say. It should be by Xmas tho and that would be wonderful after five years away from home at Xmas time.

“Dear Jean and Jerry,

In a few days we are leaving for another assignment. We are getting another POW camp near the German border. When time and space become available, we will go home from there, I guess. Sure would like to make it by Xmas but if I don’t I understand why. With Russia in the Jap war and the new bomb it may end much sooner now.

German POWs

“Dear Jean and Jerry,

We have spent the past week turning our POW camp over to the French. We are now living in an old French Chateau about seven miles from Le Mans. We aren’t doing much here but playing ball, swimming and a few classes. Guess we will sit here until they decide what to do with us. Shipping is scarce now so it may be some time in case they decide to send us home. The troops going to the Pacific have priority and there are a lot of them to be shipped from here yet.
